How to Submit Materials to the
Vermilion Historical Society

Photographs

The Society is seeking old photographs relating to the history of Vermilion Parish.  Although we would prefer to have originals, we will accept good quality reproductions or high resolution scans (preferably 300 dots per inch or higher).  If you do not have the means to scan a photograph, you can deliver the original to us—we will scan it and return it to you.  If you have the image in an electronic format on your computer, we would prefer to receive the image in its electronic form either on a USB drive, CD-ROM, or as an email attachment addressed to Gary E. Theall .  A paper printout of such an electronic image is generally not usable.  If you submit photographic images to us, you are giving us your permission to use them either on the website or at public displays or in a history book.  In general, photographs taken before 1946 are free of copyright and do not require the permission either of the photographer or of the subject.  Our mailing address is Vermilion Historical Society, P. O. Box 877, 120 Peace Street, Abbeville, LA 70511-0877.

Original Compositions (Essays, Biographies, Family Stories, etc.)

The Society is interested in accumulating original compositions relating to the history of Vermilion Parish.  Topical histories and biographies such as the ones on this website are welcomed.  We would also appreciate receiving family stories such as the ones published in our history books, for possible publication in a history book in the future.  We cannot guarantee that your composition will be published either in a history book or on the website, but if it meets our criteria, we would be pleased to publish it.  Our criteria are:  (1) the composition must be original except for the usual scholarly quotations from other works; (2) the composition must be historically accurate; (3) the composition must be readable and must be interesting to people who care about the history of Vermilion Parish; (4) the composition must be well written; and (5) the composition must be free of defamatory statements and bias.  We reserve the right to edit the composition to bring it into compliance with our criteria if we so choose.  By submitting original compositions to us, you retain the copyright, but you give us permission to publish the composition either on our website or in one of our history books, or both, with proper attribution to you as the author.  Please submit a photograph of yourself with your composition if you have hopes that it will be published on our website.  We prefer to receive compositions in electronic form, on either a USB drive, CD-ROM, or as an email attachment addressed to Gary E. Theall .  Our mailing address is Vermilion Historical Society, P. O. Box 877, 120 Peace Street, Abbeville, LA 70511-0877.

Historic Documents

Original historic documents relating to the history of Vermilion Parish submitted to us will be preserved in our archives.  If you are not willing to part with the original, we would still like to have a high quality copy.  Scanned documents may be submitted on either a USB drive, CD-ROM, or as an email attachment addressed to Gary E. Theall .  Our mailing address is Vermilion Historical Society, P. O. Box 877, 120 Peace Street, Abbeville, LA 70511-0877.  It is not necessary to submit documents recorded in the public records after the courthouse fire of 1885, as those are already preserved in the courthouse.

Books

History books, textbooks, booklets, pamphlets, and other printed matter relating in whole or in part to the history of Vermilion Parish are welcomed.  These books will be kept in the Society's library for use by students and scholars.  Our mailing address is Vermilion Historical Society, P. O. Box 877, 120 Peace Street, Abbeville, LA 70511-0877.

O. Box 877, 120 Peace Street, Abbeville, LA 70511-0877.
